Speaker Pro Tem Smit to President Trump: We’ve got your back
RELEASE|May 8, 2025
Contact: Rachelle Smit

Speaker Pro Tem Rachelle Smit on Thursday highlighted the historic relationship between Michigan House Republicans and President Donald Trump. Smit and her House Republican colleagues have been in lockstep with the President as they work collectively to reestablish common sense in government and restore American greatness.

“President Trump is delivering historic wins for our country, and we’re proud to be supporting those efforts in Michigan,” said Smit, R-Martin. “In just over 100 days, President Trump has done what past failed and weak leaders could not do in four or eight years. He closed our border, ended DEI, is lowering costs, and fights for the everyday American. His impressive leadership was sorely needed. No other Republican could’ve won over a liberal governor like Gretchen Whitmer. At this rate, Gov. Whitmer acts more like a conservative than some Republicans in the U.S. Senate.”

Michigan House Republicans have championed resolutions honoring President Trump’s first 100 days in office and supporting key priorities like mass deportations, stopping Asian carp from entering the great lakes, ensuring the long-term viability of the Selfridge Air Force Base, renaming the “Gulf of Mexico” the Gulf of America, closing the failing Department of Education. Resolutions supporting the Line 5 pipeline and American-made potash are expected to be approved soon.

President Trump supported Michigan throughout his first 100 days in office, even marking the milestone by traveling to Warren to announce a new F-15EX Eagle II fighter mission with 21 aircraft at the Selfridge Base.

The President has also publicly promised to prevent Asian carp from entering the Great Lakes and support the Brandon Road Interbasin Project, which is critical to protecting Michigan’s waters and economy.

“For as much as Joe Biden talked about the environment, I don’t think anyone cared less about our great lakes,” Smit said. “We’ve been trying to address the Asian carp invasion of our Great Lakes for years, but no one would listen. President Trump listened, just as he’s been listening to the American people every day since coming into office. Michigan Republicans are behind President Trump 100%, and we are taking strong steps to support his efforts. We will continue to do whatever it takes to support the President and work alongside him for the good of our Great Lakes State and all of the U.S.”

An executive order from President Trump declared a National Energy Emergency, allowing for emergency permitting of the proposed Enbridge Line 5 tunnel project that will secure the state’s energy infrastructure and protect thousands of Michigan jobs. Another order to increase American mineral production has expedited permitting for a proposed mine in Osceola County, which will reduce reliance on foreign potash.
